Esker Cycles seeks hardtail Zen with modern steel Japhy featuring room for 29 x 2.8″ tires

Tips & Reviews

Love the Hayduke, but wish it was built for big 29″ tires? Well, you’re in luck. Esker has taken what they’ve learned from their popular 27.5″ model, and channeled it into their newest model – the Japhy.

Built around 29″ tires, we’d call the Japhy a 29+, though it tops out at 29 x 2.8″ tire clearance. Up front, the frame is intended for a 120mm travel suspension fork which yields a 66° head tube angle.

Other measurements include a 75° seat tube angle, reach numbers of 420-490mm, and adjustable chainstay length of 425-437mm. The individual frame sizes also gain size specific externally tapered, seamless, quadruple butted, and heat treated 4130 chromoly tubing to ensure a consistent ride quality across the size range. The tubing is also ED coated, both inside and out, before painting to prevent any rust down the line.

That adjustability is thanks to their Portage dropout system which allows you to run multiple drivetrain types, hub widths, and run a rear rack.

Plenty of braze-ons are there to make sure you can mount just about anything you can think of, including custom frame bags thanks to the bolts under the top tube.

Equipped with Boost spacing dropouts, 142mm Portage plates are also available if needed. The frame is compatible with internally routed dropper posts, and runs a 44mm head tube.
