New Transition Spur mountain bike offers 120mm of all-country GiddyUp for your next XC / Trail adventure

Tips & Reviews

Cross country. Down country. All country? We’ve heard a few different ways to describe the latest shreddy XC bikes. But no matter what you call them, they all have one thing in common – efficient, light weight, fun. Now Transition Bikes is getting in on the action with their own brand of all-country GiddyUp – the all new 120mm travel Transition Spur.Advertisement

Not surprisingly, Transition says this is the lightest full suspension bike they have ever made. Built with a full carbon frame, the use of a 24T, 30T, and 40T Japanese Toray fiber and their latex coated EPS molding process helped maximize the strength to weight ratio. The end result is a frame that checks in at 2.45kg / 5.4lbs with shock, and complete builds starting at 11.2 kg / 24.7 lbs.

Offering 120mm of rear suspension travel with a 190mm x 45mm stroke shock, the frame has an additional 100mm rear travel option with a reduced shock stroke of 190mm x 37.5mm. While the rear triangle uses a flex stay design to eliminate a pivot, the rest of the suspension moves on Enduro Max sealed bearings with bearing shields on the main pivot.

Don’t let the short travel fool you, this is still a Transition. As such, they’ve brought out the Party Time Leverage Curves of their GiddyUp suspension to create a short travel bike rips. Designed around a 25-35% sag range, the suspension is meant to work without any additional remotes, levers, or knobs. Transition states that “With nearly 30% of progression and a consistent linear rate of change, the Spur has an excellent balance of support and small bump sensitivity. Anti-squat is tuned to enhance pedaling performance and acceleration but doesn’t get in the way of the suspension working when it’s needed.”

Between the progressive leverage rate and the ability to add volume spacers to the rear shock, Transition says there is “plenty of bottom out control for when things get rowdy.”

Meant to pair with a 120mm travel suspension fork, complete builds all use the new RockShox SID platform.

Transition Spur XC trail short travel 120mm mountain bike frame

Again, this isn’t your average XC bike, so the frame has been optimized to allow the longest dropper post possible. Small frames will ship with a 120mm travel post, mediums with a 150mm, large with a 180mm, and XL with a 210mm travel post! All sizes use the OneUp dropper which can be adjusted down in 10mm increments up to 20mm if the stock length is a bit too long.

Likewise, the cockpit is definitely not your typical XC set up and features an 800mm wide bar and 50mm stem. Too wide for your liking? Like most handlebars, it can easily be cut down to your preferred width.

Rolling on 29″ wheels, the frame offers clearance for 29 x 2.4″ tires and ship with Maxxis EXO casings. You’ll also find SRAM four piston G2 brakes, and the new wide range 10-52T cassettes.

Transition Spur XC trail short travel 120mm mountain bike internal routing

Shift cable routing is internal through full guides within the frame, but to prevent you from having to bleed the rear brake, the brake routing is kept external.

A threaded bottom bracket includes two-bolt chain guide mounts, and a molded chainstay and downtube protector help protect the frame. The frame includes two water bottle cage mounts – one on the inside of the front triangle and one on the bottom of the downtube. You’ll also find an additional accessory mount on the underside of the top tube which seems to be a popular addition these days.

Additional frame details include Boost 148 x 12mm rear spacing, and a 44/56mm press-fit headset.
